SAMARA ELEPHANTS

THE N-FAMILY

Meet the N-family at Samara Private Game Reserve. Following the methodology in elephant research, we have given the elephants names starting with N. All the names are Xhosa as a sign of respect for the region the elephants are in. The Xhosa names describe a characteristic of each particular elephant. Getting a photo where everyone in the family group is facing the camera – or can just be seen – is difficult. From left to right, we can see Nombeko (which means Respect), Nocwaka (meaning Quitness) in front of Nobomi (translated to Life), Nolitha (which means Beam of Light), Noluvo (meaning opinion) at the back, and Nomvula (which means Rain) on the far right with her bum towards the camera.
